La grammatica
I couldn't: È il passato e il condizionale del verbo difettivo can che significa “potere” nel senso di “permesso” ed “essere in grado/avere la capacità di fare qualcosa”. Couldn’t è la forma negativa. Nell’inglese formale, could può essere sostituito da might (con il senso di permesso), anch’esso un verbo modale.
Because: Significa “perché” e viene utilizzato nelle risposte. Nella domanda si usa invece why.
Help/can’t help: Help è un verbo regolare che significa “aiutare”. Tale verbo si costruisce con help+comp. ogg.+infinito con o senza to. Es.: I will help you (to) find your way back home, “Ti auterò a trovare la strada di casa”.
Nota come questo verbo costruito con cannot (solo negativo) significhi “fare a meno di”. In questo caso il verbo che segue help è sempre al gerundio. Es.: I can’t help thinking of you, “Non posso fare a meno di pensarti”.
Many: Significa “molti” e si usa solo per i termini contabili. Es.: many cars, “molte auto”. Per i termini non contabili si usa much. Es.: much rain, “molta pioggia”. (NB: nelle forme affermative si usa spesso a lot of per nomi singolari e plurali).
Attenzione a news, che in inglese è singolare (The news was compiled by BBC) e quindi vuole much.
